NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware volleyball team extended its winning streak to five games after beating Fairleigh Dickinson, 3-0 (30-14, 30-10, 30-15), on Friday night at Viera Court.
With the win, Delaware has now swept its last four opponents. It is the first time since 1996 that the Hens have recorded four straight 3-0 victories.
On the season, the Hens now have 10 shutouts, which is one more than they had all of last year.
During the match, Delaware (15-2) was led by Colleen Walsh, who recorded 15 kills and posted a .538 attack percentage. With her performance, Walsh now stands just 9 kills away from tying the school’s all-time career mark of 1,553 held by Karen Kunselman.
Freshman Paige Erickson (at right) also had a strong performance, tallying nine kills without a single attack error. Her .818 attack percentage was also a personal best.
Delaware came out firing in all three games, winning the match by a combined 90-39 score. It was just the second time this season the team held an opponent below 40 points.
The Hens’ dominating performance was highlighted by a streak during which they reeled off 11 straight points during the second game. Michelle LaLonde had two service aces during that stretch, while Walsh added four kills.
Stephanie Barry topped the Hens with 21 digs and four service aces. Megan Welch also chipped in with a match-high 39 assists.
Fairleigh Dickinson (7-7) was led by Ali Philbrick, who recorded a team-high five blocks. Ruth Levy added 12 assists for the Knights.
Delaware has now beaten Fairleigh Dickinson 10 straight times dating back to 1990. Overall, the Hens have now won 11 of the 13 meetings between the two teams.
Delaware returns to action next Tuesday when the team hosts UMBC at 7 p.m.
