NEWARK, DE -- James Madison and Hofstra were first round winners Friday night as the Colonial Athletic Association Volleyball Championships got underway at the University of Delaware’s Viera Court.
No. 5 seed James Madison opened the tournament by upsetting No. 4 seed William & Mary 3-1 while No. 2 seed Hofstra made quick work of No. 6 seed George Mason for a 3-0 victory.
Delaware (28-4, 12-2 CAA), the top seed and host for the tournament, will take on James Madison in the semifinals Saturday at 5 p.m. while No. 2 seed Northeastern will take on Hofstra in the other game at 7:30 p.m. The winners will advance to the CAA Championship game Sunday at 5 p.m. at Viera Court. The conference champion earns a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Delaware defeated James Madison twice during the regular season, posting a 3-1 win Sept. 29 in Harrisonburg, VA and a 3-1 win on Nov. 2 in Newark, DE.
The Dukes (17-12) opened the tournament with a 23-30, 30-19, 30-28, 30-21 victory over William & Mary (14-15) as Alyson Halls led the way with 21 kills and 19 digs and Lindsay Callahan recorded 18 kills and 12 digs. William & Mary got 12 kills from Jillian Brown.
In the second game, Hofstra (18-11) swept George Mason by scores of 30-26, 30-27, 30-19 as Lauren Engle recorded 15 kills, Harmonie Calinda added 12 kills, and Shellane Ogoshi collected 31 assists, eight kills, and nine digs. Jaqueline Kohler led George Mason (14-13) with 15 kills.
