CONWAY, SC -- The University of Delaware volleyball team bounced back from its two-game skid by topping Buffalo, 3-1 (30-19, 27-30, 30-20, 30-17), and Gardner-Webb, 3-0 (30-19, 30-16, 30-21), during the first day of the Caravelle Resort Invitational on Friday.
The Hens (12-2) were led by a balanced attack as Colleen Walsh, Kelly Gibson, Katie Dennehy, and Michelle LaLonde all recorded at least 10 kills in both matches.
Walsh (at right) led Delaware with 26 kills on the day, including 16 against Buffalo. Katie Dennehy and Michelle LaLonde both added 24 kills during the doubleheader.
Junior Kelly Gibson added her first double-double on the season with 12 kills and 15 digs in the first game, and then she tallied 12 more kills against the Runnin’ Bulldogs.
During both matches, Stephanie Barry was the leader in digs, tallying 25 in the first match and 14 in the nightcap.
Megan Welch also had two strong performances, posting 52 assists and 13 digs against Buffalo before adding 43 assists and 10 digs against Gardner-Webb. She has now posted five double-doubles on the season.
With her 95 assists on the day, Welch moved into third place on Delaware's all-time list with 3,133 career assists. She now sits just 136 assists away from second place.
Buffalo (1-12) was led by Claudia Neba, who posted a team-high 11 kills and four blocks. Marisa Hornbaker added 10 kills and six digs.
In the second game, Heidi Steinebrunner led Gardner-Webb (7-7) with eight kills, while Regina Feagin had 25 assists.
The Blue Hens return to action tomorrow at 2 p.m. when they face Coastal Carolina in the final match of the Caravelle Resort Invitational.
