LEXINGTON, KY -- Sophomore libero Stephanie Barry was one of twelve players to earn first team All-East Region honors, while senior co-captain Colleen Walsh received honorable mention accolades as selected by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
Barry and Walsh are just the second and third Blue Hens to receive All-Region honors in program history, following Karen Kunselman who was selected to the first team squad in both 1995 and 1996.
During her sophomore season, Barry (at right) set the school record for most digs in a season with 831, breaking the previous mark of 716 set by Kathy Shaw in 1994. She also placed second in the conference with a 6.39 digs-per-game average, while her 63 aces were the most in the CAA.
In 2007, Barry notched six 30-dig performances, including a season-high 46 against William & Mary on October 6. She also reached the mark against Boston College, Binghamton, New Orleans, and VCU before doing the same against Princeton in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
On November 8 against William & Mary, she also became the fastest to record 1000 career digs in school history after reaching the mark in just her 61st match and 225th game at Delaware. At present, her 1,139 career digs are the ninth most in school history, just 702 shy of the all-time record.
The award follows a host of other accolades for Barry this season. She also garnered CAA Defensive Specialist of the Year honors and was selected to the first team All-Conference squad. Throughout the season, she was also the only Blue Hen to earn All-Tournament honors during each of Delaware's four Invitational appearances, earning nods during the Delaware, New Orleans, Miami, and Coastal Carolina tournaments.
Barry is just the second player from the Colonial Athletic Association to earn first team honors since 2003 joining Hofstra's Elizabeth Curley, who made the squad last year. She is also the youngest player from the conference to earn first team honors in five years.
Walsh, a captain on the Blue Hens during the last two seasons, was one of six players to earn All-East Region Honorable Mention accolades.
During the year, Walsh (at left) led Delaware with 564 kills, which also marked the highest total by any player from the CAA since 2003. Her 4.34 kills-per-game average was also second in the conference, while her .267 hitting percentage was third on the team and sixth in the league.
She posted at least 10 kills in 33 of Delaware's 36 matches in 2007, including a season-best 30 against the William & Mary Tribe on October 6.
Against UMBC earlier this season, she also set the school record for most career kills. She finished her standout four-year career with 1,856, smashing Karen Kunselman's previous mark of 1,553 set from 1993-96.
Like Barry, the honor is one of many for Walsh this season. She was named the CAA Player of the Year and also was selected to the conference's first team preseason and postseason squads. A first team Academic All-District 2 honoree, Walsh was named the ECAC and CAA Player of the Week on October 1 as well.
Walsh and Barry helped lead the Blue Hens to a 31-5 record this season. Delaware also captured its first ever CAA Championship in 2007 and later advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Barry and Walsh were joined by a horde of players from the Atlantic Coast Conference on the All-Region squads. Clemson placed six players on the two teams, led by Didem Ege, Danielle Hepburn, Kelsey Murphy, Meghan Steiner, Jeannette Abbott, and Leslie Mansfield.
Duke had four honorees in Carrie DeMange, Ali Hausfeld, Rachael Moss, and Jenny Shull, while Georgia Tech placed both Talisa Kellogg and Ulrike Stegmann on the first-team squad.
Maryland's Jade Brown and Virginia's Sarah Kirkwood rounded out the first-team selections, while Virginia Tech's Felicia Willoughby earned honorable mention honors as well as freshman of the year accolades.
Liberty, a member of the Big South, was the only school from a conference other than the ACC or CAA to have a player honored by the AVCA, placing Nicki Scripko on the honorable mention team.
