WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- Junior Colleen Walsh (right) posted a team-high 22 kills but Delaware fell to William & Mary, 3-1 (30-24, 28-30, 30-28, 30-22), in Colonial Athletic Association volleyball action Saturday evening at Kaplan Arena.
Delaware (14-4, 5-4 CAA) has now lost three straight matches after an incredible 14-1 start. William & Mary (6-10, 3-6) snapped a two game losing streak and has now defeated the Hens three straight matches after winning both last season.
For the Blue Hens, sophomore Kelly Gibson recorded 16 kills and a career-high 28 digs. Megan Welch had 61 assists and Heather Ranck posted a team-high 29 digs. Michelle LaLonde, the reigning CAA Rookie of the Week, contributed with 14 kills and a team-high four blocks.
The Tribe had a 2-1 lead after three extremely close games. In the first the Hens were trailing 25-24 before William & Mary scored five striaght points to end the game. Delaware bounced backas they scored the final two points of the second game to win it 30-28. The Tribe then returned the favor by taking the final two points of the third game to win it 30-28 before cruising to an easy fourth game, 30-22, which clinched the 3-1 win.
William & Mary was led by Abbi Owens who posted a game-high 23 kills to go along with 11 digs. Teammate Bryana Carey tallied 15 kills and a team-high four blocks, while Kathleen Hawley recorded an impressive 35 digs for the Tribe.
The Hens will be back in action when they travel to James Madison Friday. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
