NEWARK, DE -- The Delaware volleyball team ended its regular season Saturday evening by defeating Virginia Commonwealth, 3-1 (30-19, 33-31, 36-38, 30-19), in Colonial Athletic Association action at Barbara Viera Court.
For the Blue Hens, junior Colleen Walsh recorded a game-high 27 kills while sophomore Kelly Gibson (right) posted 13 kills to go along with 21 digs. Junior Megan Welch tallied 62 assists and moved into fifth all-time at Delaware with 2,424 career assists. Senior Claire McCormack recorded her 1,000 career dig and also added seven kills for the Hens, while Heather Ranck added 21 digs in the final home matches of their careers.
After dropping an extremely close third game in which the Hens had nine match points, Delaware dominated the final half of the fourth game. After being tied 15-15, the Hens won 15 of the final 19 points to clinch the victory.
Virginia Commonwealth (14-14, 8-10 CAA) was led by Ludmila Francescatto who had a team-high 23 kills and 14 digs. Teammate Catherine Juson posted a team-high 54 assists to go along with 12 digs.
With the win, Delaware (20-8, 11-7) has completed its first 20 win season since 1997 and wrapped up at least the number five seed in the upcoming CAA Volleyball Tournament. If Northeastern were to lose its season finale Sunday to UNC Wilmington, the Hens would move to the number four seed. Either way, the number four and five seeds will meet in the first round of the CAA Tournament so Delaware will face Northeastern, a team that the Hens have beaten twice this season. The Hens and Huskies will meet Friday at 5 p.m. at Hofstra, which will host the entire tournament. Boxscore
