ST. HELENA, TRINIDAD -- University of Delaware volleyball players Megan Welch and Colleen Walsh spent two weeks of this years winter session in Trinidad. They traveled to Trinidad, the southern most island off the coast of Venezuela, on a mission trip with 12 other UD students. The trip lasted 12 days, and while there, they visited schools, orphanages and nursing homes and did construction work on the church compound in which they stayed in St. Helena, Trinidad.
The two incorporated a little volleyball into their days as they showed some of the students how to "pepper" at their school visits. They also got to experience the culture eating Trini foods like doubles, shark sandwiches, pomaracs and star fruit.
The steel pan drum, which was invented in Trinidad, was another part of the culture they experienced as they went to a pan yard and heard over 30 drummers practicing for Carnival. They visited a number of famous beaches (Maracas Bay) and the island's capital, Port of Spain.
Both Megan and Colleen felt that the trip made a big impact on their lives. The people that they met and the children that they got to spend time with will stay with them always.
