NEWARK, DE: Junior Colleen Walsh (right) recorded her 1,000th career kill but Delaware was unable to defeat Towson Tuesday evening as the Tigers ended the Hens’ nine-match home winning streak with a 3-1 (31-29, 30-27, 24-30, 30-21) victory.
For the Blue Hens, sophomore Kelly Gibson posted 20 kills and 16 digs while Walsh tallied a game-high 21 kills including the 1,000th of her career in the third game. Walsh is 60 kills away from Kathy Shaw for 10th all-time on Delaware’s kills list.
In an extremely close first game, the Hens were down 29-27 and faced two game points. After a side out Kelly Matthias and Megan Welch came up with a block to knot the game at 29-29. Towson responded quickly, though, with a Maddie Haseltine kill and then ended the game as Walsh posted an attack error.
After the emotional first game, the Tigers jumped out to a 7-0 lead before a Walsh kill sparked the Hens. However, Delaware could never fully recover and dropped the game 30-27.
In the third game the Hens were behind once again as Towson took an early 12-7 lead. However, UD ran off eight straight points to take control of the third game 15-12 and would cruise from there to win the game 30-24.
For a third straight game, Towson came out on fire in game four by taking a 4-0 lead. From there the game was played pretty evenly until the Tigers expanded a 20-17 lead to a 25-17 with five straight points and the Hens were unable to recover as Towson clinched the match with a 30-21 win.
Towson was led by Maddie Haseltine and Ally Perko, who each recorded double-doubles. Haseltine recorded a team-high 17 kills to go along with 12 digs while Perko posted 15 kills and 16 digs.
The Hens will return to action Friday when they travel to Virginia Commonwealth. Match time is set for 7 p.m
