GREEN BAY, WI -- Junior Colleen Walsh (right) posted a game-high 27 kills while only committing three errors to lead the University of Delaware volleyball team to a 3-1 (30-25, 26-30, 30-28, 30-23) victory over Kent State in the opening match of the Wisconsin-Green Bay Tournament Friday.
For the Blue Hens, junior Megan Welch recorded a game-high 69 assists while sophomore Kelly Gibson posted 24 kills and a career-high 32 digs. Freshman Michelle LaLonde continued her impressive play, tallying eight kills and a team-high seven blocks.
The Hens fell behind early in the first game and trailed Kent State 24-21 until going on a 9-1 run close the game. After dropping the second, Delaware took control by winning a close third game before cruising for the win.
Sarah Wilber led the Golden Flash with 24 kills, four digs, and five blocks. Katie Veatch posted a team-high 45 assists in the losing effort.
This year marks the third time in school history that the Hens have started 5-0 and the first since 1981.
Delaware will be back in action Saturday at the Wisconsin-Green Bay Tournament when the Hens take on Drake at 2 p.m. and then battle host Wisconsin-Green Bay in the tournament’s final game at 8 p.m.
