NEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware women’s volleyball head coach Bonnie Kenny and associate head coach Cindy Gregory have co-authored an instructional book “Volleyball: Steps to Success” published by Human Kinetics Publishers.
Kenny (at left in photo ) and Gregory (at right in photo) have served together on the Blue Hen staff for the last five years and this past season led the squad to a record of 21-9 and a berth in the Colonial Athletic Association. Kenny, who has served as an NCAA Division I head coach for 23 seasons, also led the Blue Hens to the CAA Tournament title game in 2004. She also currently serves as President of the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
The 192-page book is part of the popular Steps to Success Sports Series which has sold over 1.5 million copies. The publication is available for sale on-line at amazon.com for $17.95 or $12.21 based on super saver shipping for orders of $25 or more.
The book helps players and coaches master the essentials of the game and offers a comprehensive, progressive approach with a proven system for learning, expert instruction, crisp illustrations, and 60 drills to improve play on both sides of the net. Volleyball: Steps to Success establishes a solid foundation by detailing proper footwork and posture before moving on to individual skills of serving, passing, setting, attacking, blocking, and digging.
Recent changes in the game, such as the addition of the libero position and rally scoring, are highlighted in the team-oriented steps covering offense, defense, transitioning, and out-of-system play. The carefully selected drills and step-by-step instruction speed the development process, and the scoring system for each drill and step helps gauge progress along the way.
“Coaches Kenny and Gregory provide a wonderful coaching resource that presents the sport in an easy to follow and sequential manner,” said USA Volleyball Chief Executive Officer Doug Beal. “I found this format to be logical and user-friendly, and I particularly think the selections that provide training exercises will prove valuable to a wide range of coaches. This book is one of the best new works in our sport in some time.”
“Bonnie Kenny has been at the forefront of advancing volleyball - both on and off the court - for many years,” said Mary Wise, head coach at the University of Florida for the last 16 seasons and a two-time AVCA National coach of the Year. “Anyone who wants to improve his or her volleyball skills would benefit from this book.”
