ATLANTA, GA: The Delaware volleyball team jumped out to a 2-1 advantage before falling to Georgia State Friday evening as the Panthers downed the Hens in Colonial Athletic Association action, 3-2 (30-22, 27-30,12-30, 30-27,15-13) at the Georgia State University Sports Arena.
For Delaware, Kelly Gibson, the reigning CAA Player of the Week, posted a game-high 21 kills to go along with 14 digs. Colleen Walsh (right) added 17 kills and freshman Michelle LaLonde tallied 16 kills and a hitting percentage of .400. Setter Megan Welch led the team with 61 assists and freshman Kelly Matthias added eight kills and a team-high seven blocks.
The Blue Hens jumped out to an early 2-1 lead, including a dominating 30-12 game three win, before the Panthers rallied to take the final two games and the 3-2 victory.
Delaware, which has now lost seven of its last 10 matches after starting the season 14-1, falls to 17-8 and 8-7 in the CAA, while Georgia State improves to 10-16 and 6-9 in conference play. The Hens remain in fifth place in the conference, while the Panthers are one game behind Virginia Commonwealth for sixth place and the final spot into the CAA tournament.
Georgia State was led by Michelle Trimble, who recorded a team-high 16 kills and 10 digs, while teammate Ana Paula Ferriera recorded 14 kills and 12 digs for the Panthers.
The Hens will return to action Sunday at UNC Wilmington for a 2 p.m. start time.
