NEWARK, DE -- Sophomore Kelly Gibson (right) posted 14 kills and 17 digs to lead the University of Delaware volleyball team past Colonial Athletic Association rival Georgia State, 3-1 (30-27, 30-23, 27-30, 30-25), Saturday afternoon at Barbara Viera Court.
The Hens, which lost to Georgia State twice last season, improve to 14-1 overall and remain second in the CAA with a 5-1 conference record. The Panthers (6-10, 3-4 CAA) have now dropped two straight CAA contests after falling to Towson in a five set match Friday night.
For the Blue Hens, senior Heather Ranck posted a match-high 22 digs and a career-high seven service aces. Junior Colleen Walsh tallied 16 kills and freshman Michelle LaLonde put together another stellar game with 12 kills on 18 attack attempts with zero errors.
Delaware won a closely contested first game after Georgia State head coach Mike Webster was issued a red card which gave Delawre a point when it was leading 29-27. After the Hens dominated the second game 30-23, Georgia State fought back to take the third game 30-27.
In the fourth game the Hens jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead and never looked back as Delaware led throughout the game to clinch the victory.
Amy Lusk led Georgia State with a match-high 22 kills but also committed 11 errors, while teammate Ana Paula Ferreira posted a solid match for the Panthers with 14 kills to go along with nine digs.
The Hens will return to action Tuesday when they host Towson. Match time is set for 7 p.m at Viera Court.
