Delaware vs. Towson

The University of Delaware volleyball team fought hard in a five game match won by Towson University 3-2. Delaware fell to 9-14 on the season and 2-3 in America East play. Towson improved to 11-14 and 3-2 in conference play.

The Blue Hens who were playing without the services of two of their best hitters, Joanna Dusza and Kristen Merrill lost the first game 15-13. The Hens rallied behind the outstanding play of Margaret Lapinski (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) who had 19 kills and 17 digs for the match to capture the next two games 15-6 and 15-13.

The Tigers took the fourth game 15-12 to set up the deciding fifth game. The fifth game was a back and forth battle where no team held a lead larger than two points. The Tigers tied the game at 14 and then won the next two points to win the game 16-14.

The Hens were led by Lapinski and Carlyn Cangiano (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) who had 19 kills and 20 digs. Sadie Bjornstad(Rockford, Ill./Boylan HS) led the Hens in assists with 51 and digs with 27. Jennifer Wanner(Akron, Pa./Conestoga Valley HS) also had a double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs.

The Tigers were led by Lyssa Pershing who had 20 kills and 7 digs. Heather Turay had a team high 20 digs.
