The University of Delaware (7-12, 0-1
America East) volleyball team lost its
America East opener to Hofstra University (9-9, 1-0 America East)
3-2. It was a back and forth match between the Blue Hens and the
Flying Dutchwomen. Hofstra took the first and third game 15-8.
Delaware won the second and fourth games 15-11 and
15-5. The Hens held a 14-11 in the fifth game
before Hofstra won six of the last seven points to
win 17-15.
Kristen Merrill (St. Joseph's HS/St.
Louis, Mo.) and Jennifer Wanner (Conestoga Valley
HS/Akron, Pa.) each had double-double for the Hens.
Merrill had 16 kills and 18 digs while Wanner had
12 kills and 10 digs. Sadie Bjornstad (Boylan
HS/Rockford, Ill.) led the Blue Hens in assists
with 38. Bjornstad also had 11 digs. Carlyn
Cangiano (Centennial HS/Ellicott City, Md.) had 15
digs.
Hofstra was led by Enkelejda Katiraj,
who had 23 kills and 12 digs. Suzanne Shaw led the
Flying Dutchwomen in digs with 24. Shaw also had 12
kills. The Blue Hens return to action on Saturday
against the University of Vermont at Carpenter
Sports Building at 1 p.m.
