The University of Delaware volleyball team started off strong in the ASICS Blue Hen Invitational winning its first two matches. They defeatedMorgan State 3-0 in the first match and closed out the first day's play with 3-0 victory over Bucknell. The tournament action continues today (Saturday) for Delaware at 10:00 a.m. when they face Princeton. They play again in the final match of the tournament against Connecticut at 5:30 p.m. Delaware, who improved to 5-10 on the season, opened with a 3-0 win over Morgan State. They easily took the first two sets of the match winning 15-1 and 15-3. Morgan State battled hard in third but fell 15-11. Kristen Merrill led the Blue Hens with eight kills and a team-high 12 digs. Jennifer Wanner had a team-high nine kills for the Hens. Nicole O'Malia led the Blue Hens with 18 assists. Dorothy Buford led Morgan State with 10 kills and four digs.

In the second match, Delaware faced a tough Bucknell University team. The Blue Hens won the first two set 15-9 and 15-7. Bucknell held the lead for most of the third set but the Blue Hens came back to win 16-14 to take the match. CarlynCangiano led the Hens with 13 kills. Jennifer Wanner also had a double digit kill match with 12. Kristin Merrill led the Blue Hens with 9 digs. Sadie Bjornstad had 24 assists for the Hens. Emily Pomeroy led Bucknell with 10 kills while Tristen Voget had 12 digs.

In other action, University of Connecticut (6-9) defeated Bucknell (5-5) 15-9, 15-4, 15-4. Jenelle Koester and Annette Rynn each had 13 kills for the Huskies.

Princeton Unviersity (2-6) defeated Morgan State (2-11) 15-5, 15-9, 15-12. Rose Kuhn had 18 kills to led the Tigers. Sabrina King had 13 digs.

University of Connecticut defeated Princeton 15-7, 15-8, 15-12. Annette Rynn had 15 kills for Connecticut while Sandy Patterson led the Huskies with 12 digs.

Delaware and University of Connecticut both made it through the first night of play undefeated. Princeton stands at 1-1 while Bucknell and Morgan State are 0-2.

The University of Delaware volleyball team won its opening matchbut fell in the final match to place second at the 24th Annual ASICS Blue Hen Invitational Saturday at the Carpenter Sports Building. The Blue Hens faced Princeton in the first match and played their longest match of the season at two hours and 22 minutes. The teams alternated winning sets until Delaware won the fifth set. The Hens took the first and fourth sets winning 15-8, 15-9. Princeton rallied to take the second and third 15-12, 15-6. The Hens came back strong to win the fifth set 15-9. Three players had double-double for the Blue Hens. They were led by Kristen Merrill with 19 kills and 28 digs. Jennifer Wanner had 16 kills and 12 digs. Caryln Cangiano had 11 kills and 20 digs. Sadie Bjornstad had 51 assists.

The Blue Hens (6-11) faced Connecticut in what turned out to be the championship match of the tournament. Unfortunately for the Hens, they ran into the Huskies' Jenelle Koester who had 21 kills and had a .500 hitting percentage. The Hens lost in straight sets 15-1, 15-9, 15-7. Delaware was led by Kristen Merrill who had 14 kills and 17 digs.

In other action, Morgan State (3-11) defeated Bucknell (5-6) 15-10, 15-9, 13-15, 5-15, 15-12. Dorothy Buford had 19 kills for Morgan State.

Connecticut (7-9) defeated Morgan State (3-12) 15-4, 15-2, 15-4. Tournament MVP Janelle Koester had 10 kills for Connecticut. Princeton (4-6) defeated Bucknell (5-7) 15-9, 15-13, 6-15, 6-15, 15-10. Rose Kuhn had 20 kills for Princeton. Two Blue Hens were named to all-tournament team, Merrill and Wanner. Others named to the all-tournament team included Koester, Annette Ryan from Connecticut, Monica Scott from Morgan State, Rose Kuhn from Princeton, and Brooke Bader from Bucknell also made the team. Connecticut finished the tournament 4-0. Delaware came in second place at 3-1. Princeton finished 2-2 to come in third. Morgan State finished 1-3 and came in fourth and Bucknell went 0-4 to finish fifth.
