Delaware Splits in Season Opener at East Carolina
Tournament
The University of Delaware softball team opened its
season with a split in the first day of pool play at the
Hampton Inn/Washington Toyota Pirate Classic hosted by East
Carolina. Delaware is placed in pool C with George
Mason,Marshall, and Virginia Tech. The Hens play each school
once before being seeded into a single elimination
tournament.
The Hens opened play at 9 a.m. on Friday against George
Mason and defeated George Mason 11-0. Delaware had no time
to rest as the Hens played Marshall at 11 a.m. The Hens fell
to Marshall 1-0 to end the first day of competition 1-1.
Delaware took a 1-0 lead in the first when Chris Brady
scored on a sacrifice by Amanda Cariello. Starting pitcher
Krysta Pidstawki shut down the George Mason line-up pitching
five scoreless innings allowing only two hits. The Hens blew
the game open with five runs in the fourth and scored one
the fifth and four in the sixth to win the game 11-0.
In the second game, Marshall was able to hold the Blue
Hen offense to just two hits and scored when Shannon
Strozier drove home Nikki Wilcox for the only run of the
game. Starting pitcher Kristi O'Connell went the distance
for the Hens striking out three.
Delaware continues pool play tomorrow at 9 a.m when the
Hens face Virginia Tech. After the Virginia Tech game, the
teams are seeded into a single elimination tournament.
