Delaware Softball Takes Two from Vermont

The University of Delaware reached the 25-win plateau for just the second time in school history by taking both games of a doubleheader against the University of Vermont. The Hens, who set a school-record for wins in season last year with 27, improved to 25-9 and 5-1 in America East play by defeating Vermont 9-0, in five innings, in the first game and coming from behind to win the second game 3-1. Delaware are now 21-4 in their last 25 games. The Blue Hens have lost three of those four games by one runs and the fourth loss was by two runs in extra innings. Vermont fell to 9-17 and 0-6 in conference play.

Delaware used a strong outing from the middle of the lineup in the opening game. Delaware used multi-hit performances from Lauren Mark, who when 3 for 4 with 3 rbis, and Chris Brady when 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Mark's three rbis give her 29 on the season which is just one shy of tying the UD single season record held by Lauren Baugher who had 30 in 1994. Amanda Cariello also drove in two runs while going 1 for 4. Kristi O'Connell picked up her 12th win of the season and struck out seven in the five inning game. Amanda Surgen got the loss for Vermont.

Vermont held a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning. Blue Hen starter Krysta Pidstawski allowed a double with no outs in the fifth and then was relieved by Kristi O'Connell. O'Connell allowed a double of her own which scored the run. Delaware used five consecutive singles in the top of the seven to take a 2-1 lead. Lauren Mark, Christy Wilkins, and Erin Kelly loaded the bases. Robin Zielinski drove home Mark and Kerri Snyder, in her first start of the season, got the game-winning rbi when she plated Wilkins. Amanda Cariello brought home Kelly on a sacrifice fly to make the score 3-1. O'Connell picked up her 13th win for her two innings of relief and improved to 13-4 on the season. Vermont's Cheri Toms picked up the loss for the Catamounts.

Delaware returns to action on Sunday when the Hens travel to the University of Hartford for a doubleheader which starts at 12 noon.
