Delaware Softball Splits with
Rutgers
The University of Delaware softball team (23-9, 3-1
America East) split a doubleheader today with Rutgers
University (16-16, 3-3 Big East).
Rutgers won a pitcher's duel in the first game, 1-0.
Rutgers used a lead off single, in the first inning, by
Karen Pelkey. Pelkey then stole second came home on a
Debbie DeJong single. Blue Hen pitcher Krysta Pidstawski
allowed only two baserunners over the last six innings but
the Delaware hitters could not bring anyone across the plate
leaving nine runners on base. Rutgers pitcher Juliette
Brooks improved to 13-6 while Pidstawski fell to 10-5.
Delaware responded in the second game by jumping out to
5-0 lead on the Scarlet Knights. The Hens scored one in the
first when Mandy Welch scored on a wild pitch. The score
became 3-0 on a pair of rbi singles by Kelly Dowell and
Chris Brady. Delaware expanded the lead to 5-0 when Robin
Zielinski drove home Amanda Cariello and Lauren Mark on a
double. Rutgers rallied to make the score 5-2 in the top of
the sixth but the Hens responded with two more in the bottom
half of the inning. Laurie Brosnahan singled home Carolyn
Wasilewski and Lauren Mark drove home Chris Brady on
sacrifice fly. Kristi O'Connell improved to 11-4 on the
season. O'Connell has won six of her last seven
decisions.
Delaware returns to America East play on Friday when the
Hens travel to Vermont for a doubleheader starting at 2:30
p.m.
