Blue Hen Softball Falls in Semifinals in East
Carolina
GREENVILLE, NC - The University of Delaware
softball team lost to Virginia Tech, 11-3 in the semi-finals
of the East Carolina Tournament Sunday.
Delaware (3-3) advanced to the semi-finals earlier in the
day by defeating Eastern Michigan 1-0. Delaware rode the arm
of Krysta Pidstawski to the victory. Pidstawski
pitched seven stronginnings allowing only five hits while
striking out five. Delaware scored its lone run in third
inning when Erin Kelly scored. Afterthe third inning,
the Hens put four runners in scoring position butcould not
drive them home.
Delaware faced Virginia Tech for the second time in the
tournament, in the semi-finals and lost to the Hokies 11-3.
Virginia Tech jumped on the board early scoring six runs in
the first two innings to drive starting pitcher Kristi
O'Connell from the game.
Reliever Nicole Zanzoth fared no better allowing
three runs in the third and two more in the fifth. Delaware
was heldscoreless for the first four innings before rallying
to score all three runs in the fifth. Mandy Welch
drove in two of the runs on a bases clearing triple. Welch
scored on a sacrifice by Laurie Brosnahan.
Pidstawski and Welch were named to the All-Tournament
team.
Delaware returns to action when the Hens travel to Towson
to play in the Towson Tournament on Saturday, March 6.
