Former University of Delaware
softball standout Laurie Erickson was named part-time assistant coach
on Jan. 11, 2004.
Erickson, who closed out a
four-year career for the Blue Hens as a standout catcher in 2004, joined
the staff as a part-time assistant and will begin her third season on the UD staff in 2007.
"We are extremely pleased
to have Laurie join our staff," said head coach Bonnie Ferguson in announcing
the hiring. "Laurie was a four-year starter and two-year captain who became
an exceptional leader behind the plate. Her ability to teach catching
skills and her knowledge of the game will contribute to the ongoing growth
of our batters."
A native of Warminster, PA
(Archbishop Wood High School), Erickson was a four-year starter and two-year
captain for the Blue Hens, playing in 166 games with 152 starts. A second
team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection in both 2003 and 2004,
she started all 54 games at catcher for the Hens last spring, batting
.206 with six doubles, one home run, and 11 runs batted in.
An outstanding defensive player,
she committed just four passed ball and six errors in 333 chances and
threw out 17 base runners. She batted .296 with eight RBI for the Hens
in 2003.
A College Sports Information
Directors of America Academic All-American nominee, she also was named
to the CAA All-Tournament team, the East Carolina Pirate Classic All-Tournament
team, and earned the UD Student Services for Athletes Outstanding Contributor
Award. She earned her degree in education in 2005 and is pursuing
a master's degree in education from Delaware.
