NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware softball team scored all three of its runs on errors in the second game and defeated league-leading Georgia State 3-1 to gain a split of their Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Delaware Field.
Georgia State won the first game 4-1 as Meghan McCoy and Nichole Griffin each knocked in two runs. The Panthers, first year members of the CAA, moved to 11-19 (4-1 CAA) on the season while the host Blue Hens moved to 21-9 (3-2 CAA). The two teams will complete their three-game weekend set with a single game Sunday at 12 noon at Delaware Field.
The Blue Hens took advantage of three Georgia State errors in the second game and rode the arm of pitcher Lindsay Jones (at right), who struck out 11 batters to improve to 9-3 on the season, with the 3-1 victory.
Delaware scored all the runs they needed in the first three innings of the second game with two runs in the first and one more in the third for a 3-0 lead. Blue Hen leftfielder Quinn Megargel hit a sharp groundball to shortstop with the bases loaded but Georgia State’s Nichole Griffin let it go through her legs for an error to score Alison Borchers, who had singled, and Katie DeSalvo, who had walked.
The Hens added another unearned run in the third inning as Megargel hit a single and leftfielder Jamie Cagle bobbled the ball, allowing Michelle Plant to score.
Jones was sharp the entire day, scattering six hits, allowing just one run, and striking out 11 batters while walking just two. GSU scored its only run in the sixth inning when Jackie Jaegle led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Jessica Gowin. Georgia State’s Meghan McCoy (3-7) suffered the loss, allowing five hits and striking out eight without allowing an earned run.
Georgia State captured the opener as the Panthers scored two runs each in the first and seventh innings and Elizabeth Hyman (7-8) allowed just two hits while striking out 10 Blue Hen batters.
The Panthers went up 2-0 in the first inning as Mary Kathryn Branan and Jaegle led off the game with singles and McCoy drove both of them in with a triple to right field with one out.
Delaware cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth inning when Jenny Gilkins hit a one-out single and was pinch-run for by Megan Grau. Grau moved up to second on a sacrifice by Katie DeSalvo and scored on an RBI single up the middle by Allison Borchers. Georgia State then put the game away with two runs in the seventh as Griffin hit a two-run single up the middle for a 4-1 lead.
