NEWARK , DE - Susan Dugan and Kristi O'Connell each tossed shutouts as Delaware swept the conference opening doubleheader from Vermont, 1-0 and 4-0. O'Connell allowed just two hits in the opener, while striking out five. The senior from Elmsford, NY is now 5-4 this season. Dugan scattered six hits and pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth to raise her record to 7-1 this season. It was the second straight shutout for the junior transfer from St. Jospeh's (PA) and native of Newark. The Blue Hens (12-5, 2-0) scored the only run of the first game in the sixth. Christine Brady doubled to left with one out. Vermont decided to try to intentionally walk 1999 America East Player of the Year Lauren Mark, but the first pitch was wild and allowed Brady to move to third. The Catamounts (4-9, 0-2) then decided to pitch to Mark, who singled down the right field line to score Brady with the game-winner. In the second game, Delaware scored the game's first run on a passed ball in the third inning. That 1-0 lead was tested in the top of the sixth. After Dugan retired the first two batters of the inning, Monica Alessi singled and stole second. Nicole Bouffard followed with a ground ball in the hole on the left side. Blue Hen shortstop Carolyn Wasilewski dove into the hole and fielded the ball to hold Bouffard to an infield single and force Alessi to stop at third base. Tara Connor walked to load the bases, but Dugan coaxed Erin Barney to ground out to shortstop to end the threat. Delaware responded by scoring three times in the bottom half of the inning to blow the game open. Sophomore Amanda Cariello delivered the big hit of the inning. The St. Mark's graduate and Bear, DE native drove in two with a single to left to give the Blue Hens some much-needed insurance. Delaware and Vermont will conclude their four-game series with another doubleheader at Delaware Field Sunday at 12 noon.
