NEWARK, DE -- Kerri Snyder's
single to center field in the bottom of the 10th was
misplayed, allowing Amanda Cariello to score from
second in the bottom of the 10th ending a near-three hour
marathon and giving Delaware a win, 4-3, and split in its
doubleheader with Towson Wednesday afternoon. Towson won the
opener, 3-2.
Kristi O'Connell, who took the
loss in the opener, came on to pitch the 10th and pick up
the win in relief of Susan Dugan. Dugan scattered 11
hits over nine innings. Towson's Julie Hughes was the
tough-luck loser. Hughes, after allowing three runs in the
second inning, did not allow a hit in innings three through
seven, retiring 10 in a row at one point.
However, after Towson left the bases
loaded in the top of the 10th, Delaware's Lauren
Mark, who earlier in the day became the first Blue Hen
to record 50 hits in two seperate seasons, led off with a
single to center in the bottom half of the inning. Cariello
then hit a slow roller, on which Mark beat the throw to
second. Chris Brady, playing in her school record
175th consecutive game (all starts), followed with a ground
ball to third, where Mark was forced on a close play for the
first out.
Snyder, playing for the injured
Christy Wilkins (back spasms), followed with a single
to center. Cariello stopped at third momentarily, until
seeing Ruth Wilson bobble the ball. Cariello then raced home
without a throw to score the game-winner.
In the opener, Delaware took a 2-0 lead
in the first on a two-run single by Cariello. With the bases
loaded and two outs, Cariello hit a sinking liner to right
field that Towson's Fran Early could not hold onto, scoring
Mark and Krissy Chrisztopoulosz.
Towson rallied, however, to score single
runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings, the eventual
game-winner coming on a RBI single by Lisa Pollock to score
Early.
Delaware is now 32-11, 15-5 in America
East. In order to have shot at the America East regular
season title, the Blue Hens will need to win at least three
out of four from Boston University and have Hofstra drop
three out of four to Hartford this weekend. Boston
University (32-14) and Hofstra (33-18) are both 18-4 in
league play after they split a doubleheader on Wednesday in
Boston.
Towson is now 28-27, 11-13 in league
play. The Tigers hold a two-game lead over Maine for the
fourth and final spot in the America East Tournament.
However, Maine does hold the tie-breaker over Maine. Towson
hosts Drexel this weekend, while Maine hosts Vermont.
