Blue Hens Sweep Penn, 4-2 and 7-1 April 26, 2000 Dugan Wins 16th, Welch Goes 4 for 7 in Twinbill   NEWARK, DE -- Amanda Cariello's pinch-hit two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning broke a 2-2 tie in the opener and Susan Dugan picked up her 16th win of the season in the nightcap as Delaware swept a softball doubleheader from Penn Wednesday, 4-2 and 7-1. Mandy Welch 4 for 7 in doubleheader The Blue Hens (28-9) are now 17-1 at home this season. Cariello, a sophomore from Bear, DE (St. Mark's HS) ripped her double to center over a drawn-in outfield to score Mandy Welch and Carolyn Wasilewski. Welch, a sophomore from LaPlata, MD and the 1999 America East Rookie of the Year, went 4 for 7 in the doubleheader to raise her average to .322 on the season. Kristi O'Connell picked up the win in the opener to raise her mark to 12-7 this season. She shut down Penn after allowing two runs on three hits in the first inning. O'Connell limited the Quakers (13-27-1) to just two hits the rest of the way. In the nightcap, Dugan worked six innings and allowed just three hits, all of them in the third inning when Penn pushed across its loan run. With the seven strikeout effort, the junior from Newark, DE (Rising Sun, MD HS) raised her mark to 16-2 on the season, which is one shy of the school mark for wins in a season set by O'Connell last year. Amanda Cariello Two-run pinch-hit double in opener Delaware gave Dugan all the support she needed in the first inning with four runs on two hits, a Quaker error and four walks. After Penn's lone run in the third inning, Delaware extended the lead to 6-1 in the fourth on Christine Brady's RBI single and a first-and-third double steal that scored Welch. Delaware tacked on an unearned run in the sixth for the final margin.
