ORONO, ME -- Susan Dugan tossed a one-hitter and won her school record 18th game and Erin Kelly drove in two runs as Delaware salvaged a split of an America East doubleheader with Maine, winning the nightcap, 4-1, after dropping the opener, 1-0. Dugan, a junior from Newark, DE (Rising Sun [MD] HS) who earlier this season set a new UD mark with 12 consecutive wins, broke the old mark set by teammate Kristi O'Connell last year. O'Connell went 17-11 last year. Dugan has a chance to become Delaware's first 20-game winner and the seventh individual in America East softball history to win 20 games. Hofstra's Jen Smith was the last to win 20 games, going 20-11 in 1998. All 10 20-game winning seasons by the six individuals have been done by players from Hofstra or Boston University.
In the opener, O'Connell was the hard-luck loser, firing a three-hitter for the second straight day. However, Leigh Ann Hlywak's sacrifice fly in the second inning stood up as the game's only run. Hlywak's fly ball to left scored Erin McCabe, who pinch ran for Karyn McMullin after she doubled. McCabe moved to third on Sara Jewett's sacrifice bunt before Hlywak's fly out. It was the first time since March 22 that Delaware had been shutout. The Blue Hens (31-10, 14-4) took advantage of eight hits and four Black Bear errors in the nightcap to give Dugan support. Delaware scored three runs in the third thanks in part to Brady's two-run double. After Maine (23-23, 9-15) scored a single run in the sixth to close to within two, the Blue Hens plated a single-run in the seventh on an RBI single by Kelly. Delaware will host Towson Wednesday afternoon in a rescheduled America East doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
