Mark's Homer Lifts Hens in Opener, Drives in Two in the Nightcap
Orono, ME -- Lauren Mark went 4 for 7 in the doubleheader and drove in three runs, including a solo homer for the game's only run in the opener as Delaware swept a key America East softball doubleheader at Maine Saturday, 1-0 and 3-1. Mark, a junior from Hockessin, DE (Ursuline Academy), hit a solo home run in the fourth inning for the only run in the opener. It was the first homer of the season by the Blue Hens and the fourth of Mark's career. Mark's blast was all Kristi O'Connell in raising her record to 13-7 this season. The senior from Elmsford, NY struck out nine and allowed three hits and one walk in the complete game effort that lowered her ERA to a league-best 0.67. In the nightcap, Susan Dugan fired a three-hitter of her own and struck out five to pick up her 17th win of the season. Her 17-2 record ties the school-mark for wins by a pitcher in a season, equalling O'Connell's 17 last year.
Mark drove in runs in the first and seventh innings of the nightcap to lead the second game charge. She jumped her average to .420 and took over the league lead after Maine's Sara Jewett was held hitless in four at-bats on the day to drop her average to .410 on the season. With the wins, Delaware (30-9, 13-3) achieved the 30-win mark for the second straight season. It is the first time in school history that the team has won 30 games in back-to-back seasons. The sweep also allowed Delaware to keep pace with Hofstra and Boston University, which each swept their doubleheaders to raise their America East records to 15-3 on the season. Delaware and Maine (22-22, 8-14) complete their four-game series Sunday in Orono beginning at 11 a.m.
