HEMPSTEAD, NY - Kristi O'Connell struck out 10 in the opener and Susan Dugan fired a one-hitter in the nightcap, but neither effort was enough as Hofstra swept a key America East softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon, 2-1 and 3-2.
O'Connell allowed just four hits in the first game, but her counterpart Alicia Smith helped herself with a two-run single in the third inning and made it stand up by holding Delaware to just four hits and an unearned run. Smith (10-5) singled to center with two outs after Christine Moran doubled and Sasha Blake beat out a bunt and stole second. Delaware scored its run in the sixth when Krissy Christopulosz beat out an infield single, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored when Lauren Mark's grounder was booted with one out in the inning. However, Mark was stranded at second to end the Delaware threat. In the nightcap, Dugan took her personal 12-game winning streak and a 2-1 lead into the seventh. After getting the first out of the inning, Dugan hit Mari Shepard with a pitch. Delaware misplayed Samantha Schour's sacrifice attempt to put runners at the corners with one out. Dugan was then relieved by O'Connell, who walked LaMeka Anderson to load the bases. O'Connell then coaxed Moran into a fly out to center for the second out, which scored Shepard with the tying run. However, after walking Alicia Smith, O'Connell's first pitch to Amanda Hallaway was in the dirt, which scored Schour with the winning run. Delaware (22-7, 8-2 America East) and Hofstra (20-12, 9-1) wrap up their four-game series Sunday with another doubleheader beginning at 12 noon.
