HEMPSTEAD, NY -- Senior pitcher Kristi O'Connell fired a five-hit shutout in the opener and picked up the save in the nightcap as Delaware swept perennial America East softball power Hofstra in a doubleheader, 1-0 and 6-4, Monday afternoon.
The wins moved Delaware into a tie with Boston Unviersity atop America East and one game ahead of Hofstra. Delaware, which had its 13-game winning streak snapped when Hofstra swept a twinbill on Saturday, is now 24-7 overall and 10-2 in America East. Hofstra, which owns a win over then-No. 1 UCLA this season, is now 21-16 overall and 9-3 in league play. Boston University swept a doubleheader from Hartford Monday in Boston, 3-0 and 2-0. O'Connell, a native of Elmsford, NY who had a UD record 46-2/3 scoreless inning streak snapped in Saturday's twinbill, walked two and struck out three in raising her record to 11-5 this season. The lone run of the opening game came in the top of the first when freshman Krissy Chrisztopulos led off the game by reaching on an error. After Mandy Welch struck out, Chrisztopulos stole second as Christine Brady struck out for the second out of the inning. However, Lauren Mark singled and Chrisztopulos beat Dutch centerfielder LaMeka Anderson's throw for the game's only run. Hofstra's Alicia Smith (11-5) was equally masterful in the loss. She allowed five hits and walked none, while striking out seven.
In the nightcap, Rising Sun, MD native Susan Dugan took a no-hitter into the sixth before she surrendered a three-run homer to Amanda Hallaway and a solo shot to Jessica Luna. However, Dugan, who had a personal 12-game winning streak snapped on Saturday, already had a six-run cushion to work with.Delaware took advantage of 11 hits and four Hofstra errors and scored a run in the second on Carolyn Wasilewski's infield single, two unearned runs in the third on Erin Kelly's triple and three more in the fourth, taking advantage of three of Hofstra's errors. After Dugan (13-2) surrendered a leadoff single to start the seventh, O'Connell came in to try to close things out. After a passed ball and a wild pitch moved pinch-runner Heather Brousseau to third with no outs, O'Connell coaxed a pop out and a ground out before getting Christine Moran on a called third strike to end the ball game. The doubleheader sweep is Delaware's first-ever at Hempstead, NY. The Blue Hens lost the first two games of the series Saturday by one run apiece, 3-2 and 2-1. Sunday's twinbill was postponed until Monday because of inclement weather. Delaware will head to Rutgers for a doubleheader Wednesday at 3 p.m. before hosting Towson for four games this weekend.
