Hens Wrap-up No. 2 Seed in Split with Boston U.
May 7, 2000

Dugan Becomes UD's First 20-Game Winner

Susan Dugan

NEWARK, DE -- It wasn't easy, but Susan Dugan became the first University of Delaware softball pitcher to win 20 games as she pitched out of trouble in the seventh and gave the Blue Hens a split in its doubleheader with Boston University, 1-0. The Terriers won the first game of the doubleheader, 1-0.

Dugan, a junior from Rising Sun (MD) HS and a native of Newark, DE, is the seventh 20-game winner in America East history and records the 11th 20-win season in league history. Boston University's Audrey West completed the task three times to lead the list.

Lauren Mark's RBI single in the bottom of the first inning held up as the game's only run, but was threatened in the Terrier's half of the seventh. Nili Schnairsohn led off with a double to right center. Delaware third baseman Melissa Basilio leaped high into the air to snair a bouncer and throw out Kerry Herr for the first out. Dugan got Aryn Rangel to bounce to Basilio for the second out with Schnairsohn moving up to third on the play. However, Dugan coaxed Robyn Horrick into popping up to short to end the ball game and become the Blue Hens' first ever 20-game winner.

Dugan (20-2) scattered three hits and one walk while striking out two in outdueling Boston University's Mary Colleran. Colleran (6-8) allowed just one unearned run and scattered four hits and a walk in a losing effort.

The first game was also a pitcher's duel as Horrick outdueled Delaware's career leader in wins Kristi O'Connell. O'Connell, pitching for her final time at Delaware Field, scattered three hits and two walks while striking out eight. Horrick, however, allowed just an infield single by Kerri Snyder off of Horrick's leg. Horrick struck out five and walked three in the effort.

Boston University's run came in the fifth on a sacrifice fly to left by Kristin Knesek.

The Blue Hens and Terriers will meet again in the opening round of the America East Tournament beginning Thursday in Hempstead, NY. Second-seeded Delaware (35-12, 18-6) and third-seeded Boston University (33-17, 19-7) will play at approximately 2:30 p.m. in the second game of the day. Top-seeded Hofstra and No. 4 Towson will open the four-team double-elimination tournament at HU Softball Stadium at 12 noon.
