GREENVILLE, NC -- UNC Greensboro scored a run in the top of the first inning and held on to post a 1-0 victory over the Delaware softball team Sunday morning on the final day of the ECU Pirate Clash.
The Spartans, who improved to 9-10 on the season, scored the only run of the game in the top of the first inning when Whitney Miller singled with one out, moved to second on a single by Whitney Sirois, and scored on an RBI double by Leslie Furness.
The Blue Hens, who fell to 2-3 on the season, got their only hit of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning when junior third baseman Quinn Megargel (at right) led off the frame with a single. However UNC Greensboro pitcher Amber Harrell struck out Katie Lee and Cecile Egan, and then got Shanette Smith to fly out to leftfield to end the inning.
Harrell allowed just one hit and walks to Michelle Kenney and Egan as she improved to 6-5 on the season. Blue Hen sophomore pitcher Samantha Shawn dropped to 1-2 after allowing just one run on five hits while not walking a batter.
The Blue Hens host Pennsylvania Tuesday in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at Delaware Field in UD’s home opener.
