Delaware Softball Falls to Radford and East Carolina on Second Day of ECU Pirate Clash

GREENVILLE, NC -- The Blue Hen softball team dropped a pair of games Saturday on the second day of the ECU Pirate Clash, falling to Radford, 7-4, in its opener before falling to host East Carolina, 10-0 in five innings, in the nightcap.

The Blue Hens, who fell to 2-2 on the season, fell behind 6-0 to the Highlanders before scoring two runs in the top of the fifth inning. With one out Shanette White and Katie Lee singled, and after they advanced to second and third, Allison Borchers (at right) smacked a two-run single to cut the Radford led to four runs. The Highlanders answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but Quinn Megargel drilled a home run in the sixth inning for the Blue Hens.

In the seventh inning Lee reached on an error and scored on two passed balls to account for Delaware’s final run of the game. Lee finished 2 for 3, while Kim Ovittore added a double for the Blue Hens.

Sarah Himan was 3 for 3 with a home run a three RBI for Radford, while Ashley Taylor improved to 4-3 with the complete game victory. Anne Marie Pagano allowed six runs and three home runs in two and a third innings in the circle for Delaware, while Michelle Kenney gave up one run in the final three and two thirds innings.

East Carolina, which improved to 14-5 on the season, jumped on the Blue Hens with five runs in the top of the first in Delaware’s second game of the day. Cristen Aona drove home the first run of the game with an RBI single, while Angel Barrella had a two-run single to cap the rally.

Stacey Andrews had a two-run double in the top of the third inning for the Pirates, while Aona and Andrews each added RBI singles in the fourth inning.

Brooke Swann fired a five-inning no-hitter for the Pirates, as she allowed only walks to Katie DeSalvo and Kenney. UD starter Samantha Shawn fell to 1-1 after allowing 10 runs, five earned, on nine hits in four innings, while Pagano allowed one hit in one inning of scoreless relief.

Delaware is the fifth seed heading into Sunday’s action and will face sixth seed UNC Greensboro at 9 a.m. The winner of that game will face the winner of the Radford vs. Liberty game at 11 a.m.
