BALTIMORE, MD -- The UMBC softball team scored in its final at bat in both games as the Retrievers swept a doubleheader from Delaware, 5-1 and 4-3, Wednesday afternoon at the UMBC Softball Stadium.
The Retrievers, who improved to 26-10 on the season, took the lead in the opener by scoring a run in the bottom of the second inning off Delaware starter Michelle Kenney. Amanda Fefel led off the frame with a single into leftfield, but she was forced out at second when Krissy Licursi reached on a fielder’s choice. Ashley Gray then fouled out, but Licursi went to second on a single by Reilly Ward and came around to score on a double to rightcenter by Krista Kearns.
Delaware, which fell to 14-18-2, tied the game in the top of the fourth when Kim Ovittore drilled a home run to left, her second of the season. Ovittore is now tied for fifth place on the Blue Hen career home runs list with seven round-trippers.
The Retrievers broke the game open by scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning off Delaware reliever Carolynn Sloat. Kali Shirk led off the frame with a single to left, but she was erased when Melanie Denischuk reached on a fielder’s choice. Ashleigh Robinson then pinch-ran for Denischuk, and she advanced to third when Fefel reached on an error by Blue Hen second baseman Allison Borchers. Licursi then singled to right to score Robinson with the go-ahead run, and Gray followed with a three-run homer to right to give UMBC a four-run lead.
Gray earned the win for the Retrievers and improved to 10-4 on the season after allowing one earned run on five hits while striking out eight batters. Sloat fell to 8-9 after giving up four runs, three earned, on four hits with one strikeout in two innings of relief, while Kenney allowed one earned run on four hits in four innings in the circle.
Ovittore and Quinn Megargel each finished 2 for 3 for the Blue Hens, while Borchers had the other Delaware hit.
UMBC again struck first in the nightcap, as Dana Shepherd led off the bottom of the first with a double to leftcenter, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a single up the middle by Shirk. Licursi led off the fourth with a single, and she was pinch run for by Robinson. Gray then singled up the middle, and the runners advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Ward. Delaware starter Samantha Shawn then caught a line drive by Kearns for the second out of the inning, but Kristi Troster followed with a single up the middle to plate Robinson with the second run of the game and knock Shawn out of the game.
After not recording a hit through the first five innings, the Blue Hens got on the board by scoring a single run in the sixth. Katie Lee singled into rightfield with one out, stole second, and after Mary Ann Magee walked, Lee scored when Jessica Kozlowski reached on a fielder’s choice.
After Cecile Egan led off the top of the seventh with a double to leftcenter, Fefel relieved UMBC starter Jessica Taylor in the circle. Fefel then struck out Megargel and retired Shanette White on a groundout, but Blue Hen pinch hitter Barbara Traynor (above) followed by hitting a two-run homer, her first of the season and fourth of her career, to give Delaware a 3-2 lead.
Sloat retired Shepherd to start the bottom of the seventh inning, but Shirk and Denischuk followed with singles. Shirk was then thrown out at third by Sloat as Fefel reached on a fielder’s choice, but pinch runner Carla O’Rourke scored the tying run when Licursi reached on an error by Kenney at first base. Gray then beat out an infield single, plating Fefel with the game-winning run.
Fefel earned the victory in relief for the Retrievers and improved to 10-2 despite allowing one run on one hit in one inning. Sloat fell to 8-10 as she gave up two unearned runs on three hits in three innings of relief, while Shawn allowed two earned runs on six hits in 3.2 innings of work.
Delaware travels to Hofstra this weekend for a three game Colonial Athletic Association series with the Pride.
