GREENVILLE, NC -- The Fordham University softball team scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to post a 6-5 victory over the University of Delaware Sunday afternoon in the third place game of the Holiday Inn Express Pirate Clash hosted by East Carolina.

The Blue Hens, who fell to 2-3 on the season, scored twice in the top of the first inning. After Shanette White reached on a fielder’s choice and Kim Ovittore (right) singled, Mary Ann Magee singled home White with the first run of the game. Michelle Kenney followed with a single to score Ovittore and give Delaware an early two-run lead.

The Rams, who improved to 6-4 this year, answered with two runs in the second, one in the third and one in the fourth off Delaware starter Carolynn Sloat to take a 4-2 lead. Delaware answered in the fifth as Cecile Egan singled, Katie DeSalvo singled, and White beat out a bunt single to load the bases. Ovittore then singled home two runs to tie the
game.

The international tiebreaking rules were used in the eighth inning, as Allison Borchers was placed on second base with nobody out. Borchers then moved to third on a sacrifice by Barbara Traynor and scored on an error by the Fordham first baseman on a bunt by Quinn Megargel.

The Rams tied the game in the bottom of the frame on a one-out RBI single by Megan Hansen. Allison Storc then singled, but Hansen was thrown out at the plate by DeSalvo. However Jessica Weckenman followed with a single to score Storc with the game-winning run.

Ovittore was 2 for 4 with a run scored and two RBI to lead the Delaware attack, while Katie Lee was 1 for 2 with a double and three stolen bases.

Ayres was the winning pitcher for the Rams, while Shawn took the loss and fell to 1-2 on the season.

The Blue Hens return to action on Wednesday when Delaware travels to UMBC for a 1 p.m. doubleheader with the Retrievers.
