PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The Drexel University softball team scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Dragons posted a 6-5 comeback victory over Delaware Sunday afternoon at Drexel Field.
The Dragons, who improved to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association, struck first by scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning against Delaware pitcher Michelle Kenney (at right). Lisa Williams led of the frame by beating out an infield single, moved to second on a sacrifice by Lena Aiken, advanced to third on a groundout by Brianne Brown, and scored on a single to center by Molly Dacey.
However the Blue Hens, who fell to 5-12-1 overall and 1-2 in the conference, took control by scoring five runs in the top of the fifth. With one out Michelle Plant walked, and Allison Borchers followed with a single to center. Shanette White then flied out but Kim Ovittore followed with a single to right, scoring Plant to tie the game at 1-1.
Kenney then doubled to center, scoring Borchers and Ovittore to give the Blue Hens a 3-1 lead and knocking Dragons starter Breanna Gomez out of the game. Amanda Shattuck replaced Gomez in the circle for Drexel, but she committed an error on a groundball by Cecile Egan to extend the inning. After Quinn Megargel walked to load the bases pinch hitter Mary Ann Magee singled to second base to score Kenney, while Egan scored on a throwing error by Aiken.
The Dragons got a run back in the bottom of the sixth when Dacey laced a one-out single to right and advanced to second on an error by Egan. Blue Hen reliever Carolynn Sloat then struck out Jessica Bongiovanni, but Christina Rodriguez followed with a single to center to score Dacey and make it a 5-2 game.
Katrina Gaudier led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to leftcenter, but she was erased at second when Amanda Hastings reached on a fielder’s choice. Williams was then hit by a pitch, but Sloat got Aiken to ground out to shortstop for the second out of the inning. However after Brown walked to load the bases, Dacey reached on an error by Ovittore as two runs scored to make it a 5-4 game. Sandi Wambold then singled to center, scoring Brown and Dacey as the Dragons pulled out the comeback victory.
Gaudier, who replaced Shattuck in the circle for the Dragons in the fifth inning, earned the victory and improved to 4-1 after allowing four hits in two and a third innings of scoreless relief. Sloat dropped to 3-6 as she allowed five runs, just one earned, on five hits while recording four strikeouts in five and two thirds innings of relief. Kenney allowed one run on three hits in one inning of work for the Blue Hens.
Kenney went 3 for 4 with a run scored and two RBI to lead the Delaware attack, while Plant was 2 for 2 with a run scored.
Delaware returns to action on Wednesday when the Blue Hens travel to Delaware State for a 2 p.m. doubleheader with the Hornets.
