WILMINGTON, NC -- University of Delaware pitchers gave up just six hits on the day but the Blue Hen softball team dropped a doubleheader to UNC Wilmington, 1-0 and 2-1 in 11 innings, Saturday afternoon at Boseman Field.

Delaware, which left 19 runners on base during the twinbill including 11 in scoring position, dropped to 23-12 overall and 3-5 in the conference. The Seahawks snapped a three-game losing streak while improving to 24-21 overall and 5-3 in the league.

UNC Wilmington scored the only run of the opener in the bottom of the second when Jess Luckett singled with one out and scored on a two-out triple off the rightfield wall by Brittany Wilkins. The Blue Hens loaded the bases in the first and third innings but could not push across a run against Seahawks pitcher Jennifer Bosley, who allowed three hits and six walks to improve to 10-10 and record her first shutout of the season.

Delaware starter Carolynn Sloat gave up just one run on three hits while striking out five and walking two as she fell to 12-8 on the year. Quinn Megargel had a double while Allison Borchers and Kim Ovittore each recorded singles for the Blue Hens.

The second game was also a pitcher’s duel, as the teams remained scoreless heading into the top of the seventh until Delaware pushed across its first run of the day. Jessica Kozlowski led off the inning by reaching on an error by UNC Wilmington third baseman Krista Searle, and Katie DeSalvo followed with a bunt single. Megan Grau, pinch-running for Kozlowski, was forced at third when Borchers reached on a fielder’s choice, but Katie Lee followed with a single to right to load the bases. Michelle Plant then singled to right, scoring DeSalvo and giving the Blue Hens a 1-0 lead.

However the Seahawks answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh off Delaware starter Lindsay Jones (above), who had not allowed a hit through the first six innings. Ali Gardiner led off by reaching on a catcher’s interference call, and after an out, pinch-runner Jessica Sanders stole second base. Carley Hughes then singled to centerfield to record the Seahawks’ first hit of the game and score Sanders with the tying run.

Meghan Murray led off the bottom of the 11th inning with a single to left off of Sloat, who was in her second inning in relief of Jones. After a strikeout Murray stole second, and Gardiner reached on an error by Blue Hen first baseman Barbara Traynor. Sloat then got Searle to fly out to right for the second out of the inning, but Hughes followed with a single up the middle to score Murray with the game-winning run.

Luckett improved to 8-8 as she allowed just one run on 10 hits with five strikeouts while pitching all 11 innings. Jones received a no decision despite allowing just one unearned run on one hit and three walks while striking out eight in 9.1 innings of work, while Sloat fell to 12-9 after giving up one unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings.

Borchers and Lee each finished 3 for 5 at the plate for Delaware, while Plant, Ovittore, Kozlowski and DeSalvo each had a hit in the game.

The Blue Hens and Seahawks conclude their three-game series Sunday with a single game at Boseman Field beginning at 12 noon.
