FAIRFAX, VA -- The University of Delaware scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning on a double by Barb Traynor (at right) to post a 2-1 win over host George Mason in its Colonial Athletic Association softball opener Saturday afternoon.
The second game of the doubleheader was called due darkness with the score tied at 1-1 in the top of the ninth inning. That came will be completed Sunday at 12 noon with the regularly scheduled third game of the weekend series set to begin 20 minutes following the completion of the first game.
After trailing 1-0 since the second inning of the first game, the Hens finally put some runs on the board when it counted. Michelle Plant opened the final inning with a single and pinch-runner Courtney Kelly moved to second on a wild pitch. Pinch-hitter Kate Termini followed with a walk and Traynor cleared the bases with a two-run double to left field for the game-winner.
Delaware pitcher Carolynn Sloat, who scattered 10 hits on the day, then retired George Mason in the seventh inning to close out the win. Sloat overcame four Delaware errors to improve to 9-5 on the season.
The Blue Hens improved to 17-7 (1-0 CAA) while the Patriots’ early seasons woes continued as they fell to 0-27 (0-1 CAA) for the year.
The Patriots had scored their run in the second inning when Katlyn Winter doubled to left field and scored on a single by Kyle Noro. George Mason pitcher Arielle Weinkofsky (0 11) then cruised until the final inning. Delaware got its only other hit on a single by Katie DeSalvo in the fourth inning.
In the second game, George Mason went up 1-0 in the second inning on a solo home run by Leslie Hassen before the Hens tied the game at 1-1 in the third on an RBI single by Plant that scored Alison Borchers.
