GEORGETOWN, DE -- The University of Delaware softball team closed out the final day of the Bash at the Beach Tournament Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 loss to Marist and a 1-0 win in eight innings over St. Francis (PA) to place fifth in the 20-team tournament.

The Hens, who went 4-1 for the tournament to improve to 15-6 on the season, closed out pool play Sunday morning with a 2-1 loss to Marist but bounced back to defeat the Red Flash in the playoffs on an RBI single by freshman Kim Ovittore (at right) with two outs in the eighth inning to place fifth overall in the three-day tournament hosted by Delaware State.

In the first game, Marist pitcher Megan Rigos tossed a no-hitter and struck out three Delaware batters to post the victory. The Red Foxes jumped out to a 2-0 lead after three innings, scoring one run in the second on a run-scoring single by Marybeth Pomes and upping the lead to 2-0 in the third when Bridget Hurlman walked, advanced to third on a single by Annie Castellano, and scored on a throwing error from the outfield.

Delaware cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth inning as the Hens produced a run without a hit. Allison Borchers got on base on an error, moved over to second on a sacrifice by Katie DeSalvo, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored when Michelle Plant grounded out to second base.

But Rigos held the Hens in check the rest of the way to post the victory. Delaware starter Lindsay Jones scattered six hits and struck out five batters to fall to 6-2.

In the win over St. Francis, Delaware starter Carolynn Sloat (8-4) allowed just four hits and struck out four batters to post her second shutout of the tournament and help the Hens clinch fifth place.

Neither team could score through the regulation seven innings. In international tie breaking procedures, each team places a runner on second base to start the eighth inning. Sloat put St. Francis down in the top of the inning, giving the Hens a chance to win in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Delaware took advantage as Borchers started the inning on second base and was still there with two outs. The Hens then won the game as Ovittore lined a base-hit to right center to score Borchers.

Borchers, Ovittore, Quinn Megargel, Jessica Kozlowski, and Megan Grau each had a hit for the Blue Hens.
