ATLANTA, GA -- University of Delaware junior third baseman Michelle Plant and sophomore designated player Barbara Traynor represented the Blue Hens on the 2006 Colonial Athletic Association Softball All-Tournament Team announced Saturday following the league tournament final at Bob Heck Field on the campus of Georgia State University.
Plant (above right) went 4 for 5 in the two games with an RBI and a run scored, while Traynor was 4 for 8 with a run batted in and two runs scored. Plant went 2 for 2 in Delaware’s 6-5 loss to Georgia State Thursday in the tournament’s first round as she doubled and scored in the second inning, singled in the fourth and was hit by a pitch in the fifth. After singling in the third, Traynor (below right) hit a one-out double in the fifth and came around to score the Blue Hens’ final run of the game.
Plant went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a walk in Friday’s 3-2, nine-inning loss to UNC Wilmington as she singled home Traynor in the fourth and again singled in the seventh. Traynor, who finished 2 for 4 with a run batted in and a run scored, drilled an RBI single in the fourth, came around to score the tying run on Plant’s hit, and singled in the eighth.
Ashley Lane of Hofstra, which captured its fifth straight CAA Tournament championship, was named the Most Outstanding Player and was joined on the All-Tournament Team by teammates Laura Sweeney, Lisa Wambold and Tara Ulrich. Elizabeth Hyman, Jackie Jaegle and Meghan McCoy represented Georgia State on the squad, which also featured Whitney Knudsen and Carley Hughes from UNC Wilmington, Plant and Traynor.
Delaware finished its season 33-24, as the Blue Hens tied for the second-most wins in a season in school history. Plant, who started all 57 games this year, batted .222 with 39 hits, 26 runs scored and 23 RBI. Traynor, who appeared in 54 games with 50 starts, batted .234 with 36 hits, 17 runs scored and 20 RBI.
