NEWARK, DE
(May 1, 2005) -- Towson University pitcher
Jessica Fisher recorded the save in the
opener and threw a no-hitter in the
nightcap to lead the Tiger softball team
to a doubleheader sweep of Delaware, 5-4
and 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Delaware
Field.
Towson,
which improved to 32-16 overall and 10-2
in the Colonial Athletic Association,
remained in contention for the top seed in
the four-team league tournament in two
weeks. The Blue Hens, who fell to 26-22
overall and 5-9 in the conference,
remained in fifth place in the league
standings.
Delaware
struck first in the opener during the
bottom of the first inning as sophomore
third baseman Michelle Plant (Woodbridge,
VA/Woodbridge) led off by getting hit by a
pitch, went to second on a sacrifice bunt
by senior rightfielder Kelley Pastic
(Centreville, VA/Chantilly), advanced to
third on a single to right by freshman
second baseman Allison Borchers (Fallston,
MD/Fallston), and scored when freshman
first baseman Barbara Traynor (Wheaton,
IL/Wheaton Warrenville South) singled to
right. However Towson took the lead by
scoring three unearned runs in the top of
the third.
Jen
Hastings led off by reaching on an error
by Traynor, and one out later Jenny
Edwards worked a walk. Kelly Mumbauer
followed with a single to left to score
Hastings, and after a line out, Jeanne
Bosch singled up the middle to plate
Edwards. Samantha Schaukowitch then
singled home Mumbauer to give the Tigers a
3-1 lead.
The Blue
Hens answered with two runs in the bottom
of the fourth to tie the game at 3-3.
Freshman designated player Natalie Savona
(Stamford, CT/Stamford) led off with a
single up the middle, and she moved to
second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman
catcher Jessica Ralston (Boonton Township,
NJ/Montville Township). One out later
freshman shortstop Kimberly Williams
(Circleville, OH/Circleville) and freshman
centerfielder Katie Lee (Manassas,
VA/Osbourn) each walked to load the bases,
and when Mumbauer misplayed a groundball
hit to short by Plant, Savona and Williams
scored to get Delaware even.
The Tigers
went back ahead in the top of the fifth
when Megan Zwoyer singled through the left
side with one out and scored when Bosch
followed with a triple to rightcenter. One
out later Nina Navarro singled into left
to plate Bosch and put Towson ahead, 5-3,
but the Blue Hens got a run back in the
sixth when Lee doubled to left with one
out and scored when Plant followed with a
double to rightcenter.
Delaware
had a chance to tie the game in the bottom
of the seventh when Traynor led off with a
triple to right off of Towson starter
Jessica Wides. However Jessica Fisher then
entered the game and struck out Savona and
Ralston before getting senior leftfielder
Lauren Gardner (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford)
to ground back to the mound to escape the
jam and record her first save of the
season.
Wides
picked up the win and improved to 11-7
after allowing four runs, two earned, on
eight hits while striking out two in
six-plus innings of work. Delaware
sophomore pitcher Carolynn Sloat (Ballston
Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) took the loss and
fell to 15-11 after she gave up five runs,
two earned, on seven hits while striking
out four in seven innings in the
circle.
Savona
finished 2-for-3 with a run scored for the
Blue Hens, while Traynor was 2-for-4 with
an RBI and Borchers also had a pair of
hits.
Towson
scored the only run of the second game in
the top of the third when Edwards singled
to left with one out, moved to second on a
groundout, and scored on a double to
leftcenter by Zwoyer. That would be enough
for Fisher, who struck out four and did
not walk a batter to improve to 15-6 on
the season. Delaware's only baserunner
came in the bottom of the third when
Gardner reached on an error by Zwoyer at
second base.
Blue Hen
junior starter Lindsay Jones (South
Milwaukee, WI/South Milwaukee) -above-
fell to 1-1 on the year despite allowing
just one run on five hits and striking out
two while not walking a batter.
Delaware
returns to action Wednesday with a 2 p.m.
doubleheader at Maryland.
