Date: February 26, 2005

Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box

NORFOLK, VA -- The University of Delaware softball team dropped a pair of games Saturday on the second day of the Mid-Atlantic Softball College Umpires Association Tournament, falling to Villanova, 8-2, and to San Jose State, 9-0.

The Wildcats, who improved to 5-4, jumped on Blue Hen senior starter Jenn Joseph (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) for four runs in the top of the first inning. With two outs Sarah Wall doubled to left field to score Sheri Donley, and Wall came around to score on a single by Allie Wisniewski. After Krissy Youch singled to score Kari Koller, Cassie Koenig singled and Wieniewski scored on a throwing error by Blue Hen freshman centerfielder Katie Lee (Manassas, VA/Osbourn).

Delaware, which fell to 1-2 following the pair of losses, got on the board in the bottom of the second when freshman first baseman Barbara Traynor (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton Warrenville South) doubled to left center and scored when sophomore shortstop Michelle Plant (above) (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge) doubled to left. However, Villanova put the game away with four runs in the top of the fourth.

After the Wildcats loaded the bases with one out Wall singled home two runs, and later in the inning Lisa Curran singled home two more to give Villanova an 8-1 lead. The Blue Hens picked up their second run in the fifth as Plant singled to right field, stole second, and scored when freshman second baseman Allison Borchers (Fallston, MD/Fallston) singled to center.

Kristen Haynes allowed one run on three hits while pitching the first four innings to pick up the win for the Wildcats, while Shannon Williams relieved Haynes and gave up one run on two hits in three innings of work. Joseph went the entire game for Delaware, allowing eight runs, four earned, on 12 hits while striking out four and walking four.

In the second game San Jose State (9-7) pitcher Carol Forbes threw a two-hitter and struck out three to pick up the victory, while Courtney Lewis led the Spartan 11-hit attack by going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in. Sophomore Carolynn Sloat (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) took the loss for the Blue Hens, as she struck out two while walking five.

The Blue Hens will face Radford Sunday at 11 a.m. on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan College on the final day of the tournament. If the Blue Hens win they will face the Highlanders again at 1 p.m.; if Delaware loses it will take on San Jose State at 1 p.m.
