Callie
Osbourne Throws Shutout As Hofstra
Softball Downs Delaware, 3-0, To Complete
Three-Game Sweep
Date:
April 10, 2005
NEWARK, DE
-- Hofstra University pitcher Callie
Osborne threw her third consecutive
shutout and her second in two days over
Delaware to lead the Pride softball team
to a 3-0 win over the Blue Hens Sunday
afternoon.
Hofstra,
which also won twice over Delaware
Saturday by scores of 1-0 and 6-0, swept
the three-game series while improving to
23-12 overall and 4-1 in the Colonial
Athletic Association. The Blue Hens
dropped to 16-17 overall and 3-6 in the
conference.
The Pride
took the lead in the top of the first as
Lisa Wambold doubled with one out and
scored when Ashley Lane singled up the
middle. Hailey Clark led off the second
with a double down the leftfield line and
scored when Lisa Torres followed with a
double to left to give Hofstra a two-run
lead. Wambold made it a 3-0 game in the
fifth when she hit a home run to
rightfield, her team-leading ninth
round-tripper of the year.
The Blue
Hens could not manage a hit through the
first six innings, but mounted a rally in
the seventh. Senior Jenn Joseph
(Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) -above- led
off with a single to center, and one out
later sophomore Michelle Plant
(Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge) beat out an
infield single. Freshman Kimberly Williams
(Circleville, OH/Circleville) followed
with a walk to load the bases, but
Osbourne got freshman Natalie Savona
(Stamford, CT/Stamford) to bounce into a
fielder's choice and retired senior Lauren
Gardner (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford) on an
infield pop-up to end the game.
Blue Hen
sophomore Carolynn Sloat (Ballston Lake,
NY/Shenendehowa) started in the circle for
Delaware and allowed all three runs on six
hits while striking out four to fall to
10-8 on the year. Joseph gave up three
hits and struck out three in two scoreless
innings of relief. Osborne won her 10th
straight decision for Hofstra, one shy of
the school record, and tied her
career-high with 10 strikeouts.
The Blue
Hens return home Wednesday to host Rider
in a nonconference doubleheader beginning
at 3 p.m.
