-- Hofstra University pitchers Callie
Osborne and Adrienne Clark each threw
shutouts as the Pride softball team swept
a doubleheader from Delaware, 1-0 and 6-0,
Saturday afternoon at Delaware
Field.
The opener
remained scoreless until the top of the
sixth before Hofstra, which improved to
22-12 overall and 3-1 in the Colonial
Athletic Association following the pair of
wins, pushed across the only run of the
game. Lisa Wambold led off with a bunt
single and stole second while Ashley Lane
struck out. Wambold then stole third and
scored when Delaware catcher Natalie
Savona's (Stamford, CT/Stamford) throw was
wide and got away from freshman shortstop
Kimberly Williams (Circleville,
OH/Circleville).
Osborne
then retired the side in order in the
sixth and seventh innings to pick up the
win and improve to 12-5 on the year. She
scattered three hits and walked just one
while striking out five and stranded nine
Blue Hen runners on the bases. Delaware
sophomore Carolynn Sloat (Ballston Lake,
NY/Shenendehowa) -above- dropped to 10-7
despite allowing just one unearned run on
four hits while striking out seven and
walking just one for the Blue Hens, who
dropped to 16-16 overall and 3-5 in the
conference.
The Blue
Hens, who got singles from freshman
centerfielder Katie Lee (Manassas,
VA/Osbourn), senior first baseman Jenn
Joseph (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine), and
sophomore third baseman Michelle Plant
(Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge), had runners
on the corners with one out in the second
and loaded the bases in the fourth, but
could not push across a run.
The Pride
struck first in the second game by scoring
three runs in the top of the third. Laura
Sweeney singled to lead off the frame and
moved to third on a bunt single by
Wambold. Following a line out Wambold
stole second, and Sweeney scored when she
beat Joseph's throw to the plate on a bunt
by Hailey Clark. Stefanie Kenney followed
with a double to rightcenter to score
Wambold and Clark as Hofstra took a
three-run lead.
The Pride
added a run in the fourth as Lisa Torres
singled to lead off the inning, advanced
to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kelly
Morris, moved to third on a wild pitch,
and scored on a triple by Wambold. Hofstra
scored another run in the fifth when
Kenney singled and came around to score on
a double by Tara Ulrich, and in the
seventh Lane doubled and scored on a
single by Kenney to record the Pride's
sixth run.
Clark
allowed just a single to Plant in the
second inning and a walk to freshman
second baseman Allison Borchers (Fallston,
MD/Fallston) in the third to improve to
7-6 on the year. Joseph gave up six earned
runs on 10 hits while striking out four as
she fell to 5-9 on the season.
The Pride
and Blue Hens conclude their three-game
series Sunday with a 12 noon single game
at Delaware Field.
