George
Mason Rallies To Defeat Delaware, 10-6, In
CAA Softball Opener
Date:
March 25, 2005
FAIRFAX,
VA -- The George Mason University softball
team rallied for five runs in the fifth
and sixth innings to rally for a 10-6
victory over the University of Delaware
Friday afternoon at George Mason Field in
the Colonial Athletic Association opener
for both teams.
The
Patriots, who improved to 10-15 overall
and 1-0 in the league, trailed 3-0 heading
into the bottom of the fifth but scored
five runs off of Delaware sophomore
starter Carolynn Sloat (Ballston Lake,
NY/Shenendehowa). Emily Grapel singled to
left field with one out, and Amanda Bach
followed with a two-run homer to left to
cut the Blue Hens lead to one.
Stacy
James and Emily Miller each singled, and
on a double steal James came around to
score while Miller ended up at third when
Delaware freshman catcher Natalie Savona
(Stamford, CT/Stamford) committed a
throwing error. Megan Farrell followed
with an RBI groundout to score Miller and
give George Mason a 4-3 lead. Katlyn
Winter then singled, and following a walk
by Arielle Weinkofsky, Lesley Hassen
singled to left to plate Winter with the
Patriots' fifth run of the
inning.
However
Delaware, which fell to 9-12 overall and
0-1 in the conference, answered with a
pair of runs in the top of the sixth to
tie the game. Senior first baseman Jenn
Joseph (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) led off
by singling to second base, and after
freshman Melissa Morris (Millsboro,
DE/Sussex Central) pinch ran for Joseph,
freshman designated player Barbara Traynor
(Wheaton, IL/Wheaton Warrenville South)
-above- singled to center to put runners
on the corners with nobody out. Sophomore
third baseman Michelle Plant (Woodbridge,
VA/Woodbridge) then hit a sacrifice fly to
left to score Morris, and an error by
Grapel on a ground ball hit by UD freshman
shortstop Kimberly Williams (Circleville,
OH/Circleville) put runners on second and
third. Savona followed with a sacrifice
fly to score Traynor and move Williams to
third and knot the game at 5-5, but senior
leftfielder Lauren Gardner (Chelmsford,
MA/Chelmsford) grounded out to third to
end the inning.
George
Mason then put the game away by scoring
five more runs in the bottom of the
inning. Bach started the rally by working
a walk with one out, and advanced to
second on a balk. James then singled to
center to score Bach, and she advanced to
third on an error by Delaware
centerfielder Katie Lee (Manassas,
VA/Osbourn). After Miller followed with a
single to plate James and put the Patriots
up 7-5, and Farrell singled to left to
knock Sloat out of the game.
Blue Hen
sophomore Kelsey Knapp (Leechburg,
PA/Kiski Area) relieved Sloat and got
Winter to hit into a fielder's choice, but
a single by Jenna Cooksey loaded the bases
and Hassen followed with a three-run
double to make it a 10-5 game.
Delaware
added a run in the seventh as senior
rightfielder Kelley Pastic (Centreville,
VA/Chantilly) led off with an infield
single, moved to second on a single by
freshman second baseman Allison Borchers
(Fallston, MD/Fallston), and scored one
out later on a single by
Joseph.
Farrell
allowed nine hits and six runs, although
only two runs were earned, to pick up the
win and improve to 6-3 on the season.
Sloat gave up 12 hits and nine runs, all
earned, in 5.1 innings of work while
falling to 6-5 this year.
The Blue
Hens took the lead in the top of the third
by scoring three runs. Gardner led off by
singling to left, and after Pastic
sacrificed her to second, she came around
to score when Borchers reached on an
error. Lee then singled and moved to
second while Borchers went to third on
another Patriots error, and one out later
Traynor singled to right to score both
runners.
Borchers,
Joseph, and Traynor each went 2-for-4 for
the Blue Hens, while Lee, Gardner, and
Pastic added a hit apiece. James led the
George Mason attack by going 3-for-4 with
two runs scored and an RBI, while Hassen
was 2-for-4 with four runs batted
in.
The teams
were scheduled to play a doubleheader
Friday, but played just one game due to
poor field conditions. The Blue Hens and
Patriots will now play two games on
Saturday beginning at 12 noon.
