Hens Fall to Elon 4-3 in Semifinals at
East Carolina Pirate Clash

GREENVILLE,
NC -- The University of Delaware
softball squad wrapped up a successful
weekend at the Pirate Clash Tournament at
East Carolina University Sunday afternoon
as the Blue Hens defeated Liberty 4-2 in
the first round of the elimination
playoffs before falling to Elon 4-3 in the
semifinals.
Delaware,
which features four freshmen in the
starting lineup, posted a 3-3 record
during the three-day, nine-team tournament
and moved its record to 4-7 on the season.
The Blue
Hens, who split their first four games in
the tournament to earn the No. 4 seed for
Sunday's elimination bracket, downed No. 5
seed Liberty 4-2 in the morning game as
the Hens made the most of three hits and
got an outstanding effort from Carolynn
Sloat in the circle.
Freshman
Allison Borchers walked three times and
scored two runs to lead the Delaware
offense. She walked and scored on an error
to give Delaware a 1-0 lead in the first
inning and walked again to open the third
inning and scored on an RBI single by Jenn
Joseph to give the Hens a 2-0 lead. Joseph
then scored on a sacrifice fly to right
field by Randi Isaacs for a 3-0 lead. The
Hens made it 4-0 in the fourth inning when
Barbara Traynor singled and scored on a
double to left center by Lauren Gardner
(right).
Sloat
(2-3) allowed just two runs and two hits
while striking out seven batters to earn
the victory. The Flames scored single runs
in the fifth and seventh innings but never
took the lead.
Delaware
lost 4-3 in the semifinals as No. 8 seed
Elon broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning
when Nicole Ellis led off with a double
and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tracey
Dahlen. Elon, whom the Hens defeated 6-3
in Friday's opening round, advanced to the
semifinals with a 5-1 upset over Princeton
in the quarterfinals.
Elon
jumped out to a 3-0 lead against the Hens
with two runs in the first and one in the
second but Delaware rallied to tie as
Joseph reached base and scored on an error
in the third inning and the Hens scored
two runs in the fifth as Joseph was hit by
a pitch to load the bases and freshman
Kimberly Williams followed with a two-run
single.
Joseph
(1-4) took the loss for the Blue Hens,
allowing four runs and nine hits. Delaware
had several chances to break the game open
but left the bases loaded in both the
second and fifth innings. Borchers and
Williams each collected two hits for the
Hens.
