GREENVILLE,
NC -- The University of Delaware softball
team split a pair of games during the
first day of the Pirate Clash hosted by
East Carolina University Friday afternoon.
Delaware
(2-5) downed Elon 6-3 in the opener before
falling to Marshall by a 3-0 score in the
second game. The Blue Hens will continue
action Saturday when they take on
Binghamton at 11 a.m. and North Carolina
State at 3 p.m. The tournament continues
through Sunday.
The Hens
snapped a four-game losing streak in the
first game as they scored five runs in the
fifth inning and banged out nine hits
overall on the way to the comeback win
over Elon.
After Elon
scored two runs in the fourth inning to
take a 2-0 lead, the Hens battled back
with five runs in the fifth to put the
game away. Winning pitcher Jenn Joseph
(1-2), who scattered six hits to pick up
her first win of the season and her 26th
career victory, opened the inning with a
double and scored the first run after
Barbara Traynor singled, Michelle Plant
was hit by a pitch, and Kelly Williams
added an RBI single. Blue Hen freshmen
Kathleen Lee and Allison Borchers (right)
followed with back-to-back two-run singles
to up the lead to 5-2.
Borchers,
Traynor, and Williams all collected two
hits each to pace the Blue Hen attack.
Whitney Meeks took the loss for Elon,
which fell to 7-8 on the
season.
In the
second game, Marshall pitcher Randi
Nielsen held the Blue Hens to just two
hits and struck out seven batters as the
Thundering Herd improved to 7-6 on the
season with a nine-hit attack.
Delaware
got its only hits of the game on a first
inning single by Plant and a second inning
single by Borchers. Delaware's Carolynn
Sloat (0-3) took the loss despite striking
out eight batters. All of Marshall's runs
were unearned, including a game-clinching
run in the first when Jessica Williams
reached second base on an error, moved to
third on a passed ball, and scored on
another passed ball. The Herd added single
runs in the third and seventh for the
victory.
