GEORGETOWN,
DE -- The University of Delaware softball
team defeated Delaware State, 5-0, in its
first game and fell to Monmouth, 3-0, in
its second game Saturday afternoon during
the second day of the Bash at the
Beach.
The Blue
Hens, who are now 8-11 on the season,
jumped on the Hornets for four runs in the
bottom of the third inning. Senior Kelley
Pastic (Centreville, VA/Chantilly) started
the frame by getting hit by a pitch, and
freshman Allison Borchers (Fallston,
MD/Fallston) followed with a walk.
Freshman Katie Lee (Manassas, VA/Osbourn)
advanced both runners with a sacrifice,
and senior Jenn Joseph (Wilmington,
DE/Brandywine) followed with a single to
score Pastic and Borchers. Freshman
Barbara Traynor (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton
Warrenville South) then singled, and after
sophomore Michelle Plant (Woodbridge,
VA/Woodbridge) singled to score Joseph,
Traynor crossed the plate on a Delaware
State throwing error.
Delaware
added a run in the sixth as Lee walked
with one out, stole second, moved to third
on a Joseph single, and scored when
Traynor reached on an error by the Hornet
first baseman.
Blue Hen
sophomore starter Carolynn Sloat (Ballston
Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) posted her third
shutout of the season, as she scattered
four hits and struck out three while
improving to 4-4 on the season. Janice
Savage took the loss for the Hornets after
allowing four runs on six hits while
striking out five in three innings of work
before being replaced by Jessica
Murray.
Joseph
(above) finished 1-for-3 with two runs
batted in during the opener, while Plant
was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
In the
second game, the Hawks scored the only run
they would need in the top of the second
when Jessica Christ walked, moved to
second on a groundout, advanced to third
on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice
fly by Dana Pasini.
Monmouth
(9-6) added a run in the third as Kristin
Wilson bunted for a single, advanced to
second on a single by Sue Micchelli, and
one out later scored when Dawn Gilchrist
singled. In the fifth Micchelli singled,
advanced to third on a sacrifice by
Heather Gordon, and scored on a single by
Christ.
Hawks
pitcher Angela Rand shut out the Blue Hens
on three hits, allowing singles to Lee,
freshman Kimberly Williams (Circleville,
OH/Circleville), and junior Heather Wrenn
(Centreville, VA/Centreville).
Joseph
took the loss for Delaware, as she fell to
1-7, by allowing two runs on six hits in
four innings of work. She was relieved by
Sloat, who gave up one run on three hits
in the final three innings.
The Blue
Hens will conclude play Sunday in the
tournament's bracket round. Delaware's
opponents and game times have not yet been
announced.
