Delaware 1, Fairfield 0 (8 innings) Pirate Classic at East Carolina 2nd Round • February 21, 2004 Blue Hens Bounce Back With Two Victories at Pirate Classic Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Boxscore GREENVILLE, NC -- Just one day after dropping the first two games of the season, the University of Delaware softball team bounced back with two big wins with victories of 4-1 over Towson and 1-0 over Fairfield on the second day of the Pirate Classic at East Carolina University Saturday afternoon. The Blue Hens (2-2) now enter the single-elimination tournament playoffs which begin Sunday at 9 a.m. Should the Hens win that game, they could move to play two more games for the tournament title. Delaware won Saturday's opener with a 4-1 victory over Colonial Athletic Association foe Towson (2-1) as the Blue Hens banged out 10 hits and put across single runs in the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings. Starting pitcher Jenn Joseph (1-1) allowed just three hits, struck out three, and did not allow a run until there were two outs in the seventh inning. First baseman Liz Winslow, catcher Laurie Erickson, and Joseph all collected two hits with third baseman Laura Streets, Winslow, and Joseph each knocking in a run. Delaware opened the scoring in the second inning as Randi Isaacs led off with a double, Erickson singled, and Joseph scored Isaacs with a sacrifice fly. The Hens added a run in the third on an RBI single by Winslow, one run in the fourth on a bases loaded walk by Streets, and a run in the sixth when Heather Wrenn scored on a wild pitch. The Blue Hens needed eight innings to win the second game over Fairfield (0-3) as Jenny Gilkins connected on a run-scoring bases loaded single in the top of the eighth to make a winner of freshman Carolynn Sloat (1-1). Sloat went the distance, allowing just four hits, walking four, and striking out seven. Sloat retired the Stags in order in the eighth inning to clinch the win. Michelle Plant, Streets, Gilkins, and Joseph all picked up singles for the Blue Hens. Fairfield pitcher Tracy Sylvestre suffered the loss despite allowing four hits and striking out five.
