Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Boxscore GREENVILLE, NC -- The University of Delaware softball team got off to a rough start Friday afternoon as the Blue Hens fell to host East Carolina 10-0 and to George Mason 6-2 in the opening round of the East Carolina University Pirate Classic at Conley High School. The Blue Hens (0-2), who were making their 2004 season opener, continue pool play at the tournament Saturday with games against Towson University at 10 a.m. and against Fairfield at 12 noon. The tournament playoffs will take place Sunday. Host East Carolina (3-0-1) banged out 11 hits, stole seven bases, and got a big lift from shortstop Christine Sheridan in the opener to post the 10-0 victory. Sheridan, who knocked in seven runs, keyed a four-run second inning with a bases loaded triple and then cleared the bases again in the fifth with a grand slam. The game was stopped after five innings due to the 10-run rule. Delaware was held to just five hits as Laura Streets and Randi Isaacs each went 2 for 2 with Isaacs contributing a double. Freshman pitcher Carolyn Sloat took the loss in her collegiate debut, allowing 10 runs (six earned), and striking out four. In the second game, Colonial Athletic Association foe George Mason (2-2) picked up the 6-2 victory behind a four-run second inning that put the game away. Megan Farrell allowed just five hits to pick up the win for George Mason while Jenn Joseph (0-1) suffered the loss for the Hens. The Patriots opened the scoring with a single run in the first inning and upped the lead to 5-0 thanks to a four-run third inning. Shortstop Stacey James knocked in two runs with a double, her first of two two-base hits on the day, and Kathy Hrycyna knocked in another run on a fielder's choice. Delaware scored its first two runs of the season in the bottom of the third as freshman shortstop Michelle Plant and sophomore centerfielder Kelley Pastic led off with singles and Street doubled both home.
