Villanova 5, Delaware 2 Villanova 8, Delaware 2 April 23, 2003 Wildcats Capitolize on Eight Blue Hen Errors to Post Sweep NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware committed eight errors on the afternoon and Allison Wisniewski posted two RBI for the Wildcats and the University of Delaware dropped both games of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon to Villanova, 5-2 and 8-2 at Delaware Field. The Blue Hens (15-16-1), who had a six-game win streak snapped, entered the twinbill having allowed just one earned run in their last 42 innings of action. Game one featured a total of five errors by the Blue Hens, including two in the first two innings that allowed the Wildcats (22-11-1) to jump out to a 5-0 lead. Ricci Lugo led off the game with a single and scored on an error by freshman second baseman Kinsey Lowrey on a grounder off the bat of Sara Carlson. Kari Koller then singled up the middle to plate Carlson and give Villanova a 2-0 lead after one inning. The Wildcats extended their lead to 5-0 in the second inning. Wisniewski and Veronica Alvarez raked back-to-back singles and both came home on Lowrey's second error of the game on a grounder from Robin Flier, who later scored on a single by Lisa Krueger. Delaware got single runs in both the fourth and the seventh. Sophomore Jenn Joseph opened the fourth with a single and later scored on a single by junior catcher Laurie Erickson. In the seventh, junior Liz Winslow led off with a double and exited for pinch-runner Heather Wrenn. Erickson followed with a single to left center to score Wrenn. Theresa Hornick picked up her 12th win of the season for the Wildcats in the opener, going six inning while allowing five hits and one earned run. Joseph took the loss for the Blue Hens, giving up five hits in four innings of work. In the second game, Villanova jumped out to a 4-0 lead on RBI from Sarah Wall and Wisniewski before the Blue Hens cut the deficit in half with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore Jenny Gilkins walked and scored on a double by senior Laura Streets to make it a 4-1 deficit. Following a walk to senior Melissa Basilio, Winslow singled to score Basilio and make it 4-2. The Wildcats tacked on four more - two in the fifth and single runs in the sixth and seventh innings - to build what proved to be an insurmountable 8-2 lead. Shannon Williams picked up her seventh win of the season for the Wildcats, going 5.1 innings and striking out three. Blue Hen starter Lindsay Jones took the loss. The Blue Hens return to action on Saturday when they take on the Patriots of George Mason in a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader.
