Towson 2, Delaware 1 (8) Delaware 4, Towson 0 May 3, 2003     Liz Winslow hit her first home run of the season NEWARK, DE -- Freshman pitcher Lindsay Jones fired a four-hit shutout in the biggest game of the season for the University of Delaware as the Blue Hens split a Colonial Athletic Association softball doubleheader with Towson on Saturday afternoon at Delaware field. Towson won the opener, 2-1, in eight innings, while Delaware won the second game, 4-0. With the Delaware win, coupled with James Madison losing twice to George Mason at home on Saturday, 6-5 and 6-4, Delaware clinched a spot in the Colonial Athletic Association Softball Tournament next weekend. The tournament will be played Thursday through Saturday, May 8-10, on the Hofstra University campus in Hempstead, NY. Delaware will join top-seeded Hofstra, Towson and George Mason in the four-team field. The second, third and fourth seeds will be determined by the outcome of tomorrow's games. Jones, a native of South Milwaukee, WI, allowed four hits and one walk while striking out three as the Blue Hens clinched a spot in the conference tournament for the eighth straight season. Jones is now 7-5 on the season with 61 strikeouts and just seven walks in 91-1/3 innings of work. After stranding seven runners in the first four innings and having just one run to show for it, Delaware gave Jones some breathing room in the fifth. Jenny Gilkins led off with a hit to left center that got through the game and to the wall for a triple. Laura Streets, Melissa Basilio and Liz Winslow followed with three consecutive doubles to extend the Delaware lead to 4-0 and chase Towson starting pitcher Beth Wilcox (10-11). Jones got into a little bit of trouble in the top of the sixth when the Tigers got runners at second and third with one out. However, a pair of groundouts got Jones out of trouble. In the seventh, Towson also had runners at first and third before Jones recorded a strikeout and the final out on a pop-up. In the opener, Towson took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by Chris Navarro. Delaware tied the game when Winslow hit her first home run of the season, a solo shot to right field, in the fourth inning. The score remained tied until the eighth when Towson took advantage of two Delaware miscues. With two outs, Jill Fraser reached on an error. Navarro followed with a bloop behind first base that fell in between two fielders. The ball bounced away as Fraser raced around and scored all the way from first on the play to give Towson the lead. The two teams will complete their three-game series on Sunday with a single-game beginning at 12 noon.
